This piece is constructed with trash collected at Noisette Creek in North Charleston. The under layer structure is made of styrofoam and covered with paper. Styrofoam was also used to distribute paint and add texture. News print and packing paper was used for the water and grass forms.
Inspired by The Star card in The Tarot, “The Edisto” symbolizes a renewed hope and faith. It represents the hope and faith that the community will continue to fight and pour into building a beautiful future for the Low Country of South Carolina. The Tarot is a language read entirely through imagery and symbols. Every color, placement, and subject is intentional. In the Tarot, The Star card follows the Tower card, a representation of turmoil and destruction. The Star ushers in a new peaceful and loving phase of life.
“The Edisto” shows a Low Country version of The Star imagery: sand cordgrass growing along the river’s edge and a Spanish moss covered oak tree in the distance with an egret in the branches. The sun and star characters are a symbol of the human spirit, continuously shining despite the traumas and trials of life. The stars in the sky were once part of the sunstar before being broken by life’s challenges. The sunstar is seen pouring water back into the river, symbolizing the care that could be poured back into the Edisto instead of building infrastructure to destroy it.
